Photographing Catches

icarp.fish

  • Hi all,

Im not new to photography, however I do always seem to struggle when it comes to photographing carp.

Does anyone have any preferences or tips?

If the sun is behind the subject I will get a silhouette,
If the sun is infront of me I get very blown out highlights on the fish, yes I can dial the settings on my camera to compensate, but then the person holding the carp becomes too dark.
If the sun is at an angle I get shadows across the carp,
If there's nowhere on the venue which is shaded how do you go about getting a good shot?

Just wondered if anyone has figured out the best or preferred angle/position when it comes to photographing your catch?

    Thanks

    Myles

    Hi @Myles92,
If it’s a sunny daytime capture I usually face the sun as the fish and you will be well lit. Camera on auto to manage the exposure. Cant say I’ve had any washed out photos with this approach. What camera are you using and what settings?
On a dull or winters day then always use a fill in flash.
Nighttime shots can look flat but if you position yourself in front of any undergrowth, you will get some bounce back off the flash.
I’m interested in using led lighting for special fish as the results I’ve seen for others look great.

  • Hi @Neil,
I use the sony a9iii with the 85mm GM lens. I always use manual mode as I like fill control over my exposure and shutter speed.
Not ever actually used a flash for fishing as I use the static led lighting myself,
I think I'm just compensating the highlights of the fish to get a well lit shot of the face. Its just finding the balance I guess. I generally try to get in the shade for even lighting but some venues are so barren.

    Nice camera :)
I have a Sony as well but went for the RX10 mk IV after years of carrying around lenses that I never used. I’ve found this a good compromise. For general outdoor photography I go manual as well but let the camera do its stuff on auto for capture shots

how do you find the led lighting? Do you position it slightly higher than your kneeling height pointing down towards you slightly?

I find the led lighting really good, I started off with the ones by Rhino but ended up buying 2 of the viltrox L116T which are really good!
Couple of adjustable stands postitioned around 45° either side of me and a little higher than where the fish will be held and they're spot on. I did use the sony HVL-F45RM for a long time but find the viltrox led lights way better and for much cheaper! Win win
